Project Name: Techo International Airport
Location: Kandal Province, Cambodia
Project Reference Year: 2026
Project Type: International Airport Terminal
Application Focus: Airport Terminal Lighting, Commercial LED Lighting and Architectural Lighting
Techo International Airport is Cambodia's new international aviation gateway, located approximately 20 kilometres south of Phnom Penh. Officially opened in 2025, the airport represents a major infrastructure development supporting Cambodia's international connectivity, tourism and economic growth.
Designed by Foster + Partners, the terminal features a distinctive wave-shaped roof inspired by the Cambodian national flower, the Rumduol. Its expansive roof structure, glazed surfaces and woven ceiling elements combine contemporary engineering with references to traditional Khmer craftsmanship.
The airport's architectural design creates a distinctive passenger environment while responding to the tropical climate and the functional requirements of a modern international terminal.
For large transportation facilities, lighting is an essential component of the overall building experience. It supports passenger circulation, visual comfort, operational safety and the presentation of architectural spaces.
Airport terminals contain a wide range of functional spaces, including check-in halls, security screening areas, departure lounges, arrival halls, corridors and passenger service facilities.
Each area requires an appropriate lighting strategy based on its function, occupancy, ceiling height and operating schedule.
LED downlights, linear luminaires and other commercial lighting fixtures can be considered according to the architectural layout and project specifications.
A coordinated lighting arrangement helps passengers identify circulation routes, locate service counters and navigate large interior spaces comfortably.
The terminal's expansive roof and flowing architectural forms create opportunities for integrated lighting design.
In large-span spaces, lighting should be coordinated with the roof structure, ceiling materials and architectural geometry. The selected luminaires should provide the required illumination while maintaining a coherent visual appearance.
Linear LED lighting can complement elongated architectural lines, while suitable downlights and other luminaires can provide general illumination in areas with appropriate mounting conditions.
Fixture placement and optical distribution should be evaluated through lighting calculations and photometric analysis.
Techo International Airport incorporates architectural features that allow natural daylight to contribute to the passenger environment.
Effective lighting design should consider the relationship between daylight and electric lighting throughout the day. In suitable areas, daylight-responsive controls can adjust artificial lighting according to available natural light and the requirements of the space.
The design should also account for changing daylight conditions, glare, reflections on glazed surfaces and the visual contrast between bright and shaded areas.
A well-coordinated approach can support passenger comfort while helping manage lighting energy consumption.
Clear visual information is essential in an international airport, where passengers need to locate check-in counters, security checkpoints, boarding gates, baggage claim areas and exits.
Lighting should support the visibility of signs, circulation routes and changes in floor level without competing with important visual information.
Uniformity, glare control, appropriate color rendering and coordinated emergency lighting are important considerations for passenger-facing areas.
The final lighting scheme should comply with the applicable aviation, building and life-safety requirements.
Different airport spaces require different lighting approaches. Depending on the project design and installation conditions, suitable LED lighting categories may include:
The final luminaire selection should be based on the lighting design, mounting conditions, required illumination levels, optical performance, control requirements and maintenance strategy.
Airports operate for extended hours and contain numerous lighting zones with different usage patterns.
LED lighting can provide an energy-efficient solution when products are selected and installed appropriately. Important evaluation criteria include system efficacy, driver quality, dimming compatibility, service life, maintenance access and the suitability of controls.
Lighting controls can be designed around occupancy patterns, daylight availability and operational schedules where permitted by the facility's requirements.
For critical airport areas, the lighting design must also consider emergency operation, system reliability and maintenance procedures.
Airport lighting projects involve coordination between architects, lighting designers, electrical engineers, contractors, operators and product suppliers.
Early coordination helps ensure that lighting equipment is compatible with the ceiling structure, building services, control systems and maintenance requirements.
Technical documentation such as product datasheets, photometric files, installation details and compliance certificates can support the evaluation and approval process.
For large infrastructure projects, the final lighting specification should be based on the approved design documents and the relevant project standards.
